Let Them Eat Cake I

2004

Embroidery and Xerox Transfer on Flour Sack

36" x 36"

In art and in life the personal is, so often, universal. It amused me how many people's faces lit up with nostalgia when viewing a pair of larger than life embroidered Hostess Twinkies.   I had an understanding of what they were thinking and remembering and, although I do not share in it myself, I will continue let them think and remember as they will.   Yet for me, it is an inside joke or more a shrug and eye roll to all those other kids out there raised on a no sweets diet.   There is no better way to raise a future addict than to deem sugar, television, etc. off limits.   Secondly, just look at those nutrition facts; perhaps, those Twinkies should stay in the cellophane where they belong.   This piece was shown at the H&R Block Art Center in Kansas City, 2004 in conjunction with an exhibition of work by Ghada Amer.   It was later purchased by a private collector in 2006.
