Embroidery on Linen

50" x 70 "

I worked on this piece exclusively during my studio residency with Urban Culture Project.   I hate to admit it but, this large, time consuming embroidery is, in part, about my studio mate and husband, Andy Maugh.   In it, not only am I referencing Andy Maugh's art work involving vacuum cleaners but, a myriad of common fears.   A frequent concern among women, when considering rooming with a man is: What will the division of labor be?   Will I become an unpaid maid?   In dating and marrying another artist, visions of Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner danced in my head.   Sacrifices will have to be made but, by whom?   Will my work be subsumed or put on hold by his?   I continue to worry over being the maid.   This work was shown at the Ellipse Arts Center in Arlington, VA in 2008.
